THE safety and efficiency of south-west roads will be improved through a $2.8 million injection.
Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas yesterday announced another roads funding package for the region.
It follows a $2.25 million package to upgrade gas and timber freight links revealed earlier this month.
``Roads are an important part of Victoria's economic and social development,'' Mr Pallas said.
``A range of projects will be delivered to make our roads safer, help tackle congestion and help regional development.''
$1.15 million will go towards rehabilitating two sections of the Woolsthorpe-Heywood Road, which will be a key route for the blue gum industry.
The road to the Warrnambool airport will also be enhanced with $552,000 in works at Yarpturk.
Other projects include:
$495,000 for road widening and safety works on Timboon-Port Campbell Road;
$250,000 for bridge rehabilitation on Hopkins Highway, Ellerslie;
$200,000 for safety improvements on Timboon-Colac Road; $135,000 to improve Cobden-Port Campbell Road; and
$25,000 for a local pedestrian strategy in Warrnambool.
In addition, more than $180 million has been allocated to asset maintenance works across regional Victoria to improve the safety and operation of roads.
The funding comes after an Auditor-General's report found Victoria's major country roads are crumbling in a funding black hole.
The report, tabled in Parliament last month, found an extra $100 million a year was needed to prop up the state's regional arterial roads.
It shows road maintenance has been underfunded by an average $37 million a year for the past nine years.
