A MELBOURNE man facing drug trafficking charges has been refused bail while his co-accused has been released on a $10,000 surety.
Jason Scott Verschaeren, 20, of Victor Court, Hampton Park, and Daniel James Caruso, 20, of Van Court, Narre Warren, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court yesterday.
The pair appeared separately for bail applications after police intercepted a Holden Commodore on Timor Street in the early hours of October 2.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Paul Harris told the court a search of the car revealed drugs, a safe disguised as a dictionary holding cannabis, hundreds of dealer bags and $1020 cash.
An imitation aerosol can containing 150 steroid tablets and 28 grams of white powder was also found, he said. Senior Constable Jarrod Dwyer opposed Mr Verschaeren's bail, arguing he was a serious flight risk as he had been serving a three-month suspended sentence when arrested.
Mr Verschaeren's sister, Tamara Lee, offered her home as a surety.
But Magistrate Ian von Einem rejected bail, citing his "propensity not to comply with the law".
Mr Caruso's father interrupted a holiday in Queensland to attend his son's show-cause hearing.
Mr Caruso was bailed on the provision he not return to Warrnambool except to instruct his legal team, and that his father provide a $10,000 surety.
Mr Verschaeren has been remanded until a contest mention in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on October 23.
Mr Caruso has been bailed to appear on November 13.
