DON'T be surprised if you hear screeches of 'Howzat' coming from Albert Street on Friday evenings.
Last night marked the start of the Vantage Backyard Cricket Program which sees disabled people taught the summer sport by Emmanuel College students.
South West Sports Assembly (SWSA) has organised the sessions along with Vantage, Cricket Victoria (CV), Picsar , AAA and Emmanuel College.
SWSA's Andrea Occhipinti said all involved were looking forward to having a hit.
"It's all about fun," she said.
"The students are going to teach them some skills and we'll have games.
"Everyone will have a bat and a bowl.
"It's a real community event because so many different people are involved." After the opening night - which included a sausage sizzle and visit from CV regional manager Stephen Field - the next four sessions will be held on Friday evenings, with Occhipinti expecting some big turn-outs.
"With disabled people, what normally happens is once word gets out about it, everyone wants to comes along," she said.
Occhipinti was pleased that the Emmanuel College students were giving up their time to help the aspiring cricketers.
"It goes towards their level one coaching," she said.
"They're all really excited about helping too, which is another great thing."
The program takes place at Albert Street's Vantage.
"It's the first time we've ever done something like this," Occhipinti said.
