Colts out of the loop but still well in contention Premiers start again

IF you reckon you are always out of the loop when it comes to gossip, spare a thought for Portland Colts.

The Warrnambool and District Cricket Association (WDCA) reigning premiers often feel like they are on the other side of the world.

With all the association's other teams in Warrnambool and surrounds, Colts coach Alister Stannard said he heard minimal news about pre-season movements.

"We do feel isolated from time to time," he said.

"Our club doesn't know much about the others but then it works in our favour because they don't know much about us.

"They don't see us around regularly either."

Last season's victors began training three months ago.

"We did a bit of fitness at the start," Stannard said. "We gradually lifted the intensity.

"Definitely running between wickets (has been our focus).

"That's one of the reasons we did so well last season so we have been continuing to work on that." The Colts have retained majority of its players.

"Jarred Andrews has gone to Essendon, which is a huge loss," Stannard said.

"We've also got a couple of guys who will start late because of footy.

"We'll be playing the guys who have been doing the work first."

The back-to-back tag is in not in the side's mind, with finals its sole aim at the moment.

"We had a great season last year but there is always lots of things we can improve on," said Stannard, who cited batting partnerships as the area needing the most work. The Colts take on Dennington at Henty Park today, with the coach unsure what to expect.

"We haven't heard a lot about any other teams and don't know much about who has picked up different players," he said.

"We'll just be worrying about ourselves at the start of the season."

Dennington's new captain-coach Glenn Skinner was looking forward to the challenge. "I think they've been training pretty well," he said.

"They'll be the team to beat so I think it's a good test for us having them first up."

Eyes will be on recruit Ben Menzel, who lives in Portland but is lining up for Dennington - which finished ninth last season.

"He's got a couple of good friends at our club so he just wants to have a hit with his mates," Skinner said.

"He looks to be a good cricketer and is keen to get going.

"So is everyone else."

Russells Creek enters the match against Nirranda Knights as favourite while Nestles should take the points over Wesley.

Brierly will be hoping to get off to a good start against West Warrnambool after the Bulls made the four last season while Merrivale and Allansford - both predicted as big improvers - will battle it out.
