Mailors Flat: we're Ready to rebound

11/10/2008 1:00:00 AM
MAILORS Flat is pretending its 2008-09 Grassmere Cricket Association season starts today - even though it is round two.

Captain-coach Leigh Finn said he wanted to forget about last week's match, where his side could manage only a disappointing 63 runs in its loss to Woolsthorpe.

"'We've left that one behind us," he said.

"We're starting all over again."

Finn is confident Mailors Flat will learn from its mistakes when it takes on Yambuk today.

"We know that we have to get a decent score," he said.

"Our bowling and fielding went pretty well, we just couldn't bat.

"We were something like two for two at the start so we were on the back foot right from the beginning."

The side will be strengthened today with the return of three key players: opening batsman Darren Loft, top-order batsman and leg spin bowler Andy Taylor and left-arm opening bowler and middle-order batsman Rob Bleumink.

Bleumink - a Timboon Demons premiership player who along with Loft and Taylor was unavailable in round one - will make his debut for the team.

The Flat, which focused on batting at training this week, hopes the visitors aren't as switched on as they were last Saturday.

"They've got plenty of experience and have come off the win against Panmure," said Finn, who cited batsmen Brian Wilson and Steve Gleeson as danger players.

"We want to get them out of the way as soon as we can," he said.

In other matches, rivals Purnim and Panmure will battle it out with the reigning premier looking to bounce back following its round-one loss to Yambuk.

After Killarney - which this week has the bye - took care of Purnim last week, the latter will also be looking to gets its first victory on the board.

Grassmere and Woolsthorpe, each with one win to their name, go head to head with Grassmere expected to take the points after easily disposing of the Panmure Pups last week.

The Pups are tipped to suffer their second loss as they take on Wangoom, which had the bye in round one.
