Soccer's sisters-in-arms to do battle

MORE than 100 girls will flock to the soccer fields today for the third annual Warrnambool Rangers Girls Gala Day.

Teams from across the south-west will battle out a full day of round-robin competition at Brauerander Park.

Warrnambool junior coach Koos Van Haaren said it was the biggest show of interest since the event started.

"The sport is really growing and the girls are developing into good soccer players," he said.

Five teams have been entered in the under 14 division, while the under 16 competition attracted seven teams.

Warrnambool will be represented by two Rangers sides, two Brauer College teams and one from the Wolves.

Portland and Colac have two teams each, while Ballarat has the highest representation with eight sides making the trip.

Van Haaren said the inclusion of the Warrnambool Wolves provided an exciting rivalry in the event.

"It is great that the Wolves will be participating in the competition. It is always good to have some local competition," he said.

Matches will be two 15 minute halves, with top team play-offs and presentations closing the day around 5 o'clock.

Van Haaren said opportunities to play in elite Ballarat sides may arise if there are any stand-out performers.

Kick-off is at nine o'clock.
