NORTH Warrnambool Eagles coach Leigh McCluskey will be issued with a `please explain' from the Hampden Football Netball League for approaching a central umpire during last Saturday's game at Leura Oval, Camperdown.
HFNL general manager Michael Harrison confirmed the league's action yesterday, saying it would ask North for a response by next week.
``We'll have to have an explanation from Leigh and we'll go from there,'' Harrison said.
``He's been asked to explain why he had a discussion with an umpire at quarter-time.''
Under VCFL rules, only team captains are allowed to speak to field umpires during game intervals.
VCFL rule 23.4 allows for players or officials in breach of the rule to be reported and dealt with by the league's independent tribunal.
No action was taken by central umpire Peter West, putting the onus back onto the league.
The HFNL has the power to take disciplinary action under its bylaws, possibly under the all-encompassing charge of bringing the game into disrepute.
A HFNL executive meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday.
McCluskey was unrepentant for his actions after last Saturday's game, revealing he sought an explanation for the umpire's interpretation of a tackle which left North onballer Xavier Mills with a head injury.
Mills was unable to finish the game after being taken to hospital for assessment.
