LAURENCE Eales and wife Prue have themselves a Caulfield Guineas winner of extraordinary talent.

Whobegotyou swept around 16 rivals to claim the $1 million classic that is known to make stallions, although this three-year-old is a gelding.

For Eales, who hails from Cairns way but is now settled in Sunbury, where the family runs a nationwide heavy equipment hire company, Whobegotyou was one of five yearlings purchased. The gelding cost $19,500 and was one of five Street Cry gallopers Eales bought.

"I lost one in a paddock, a colt, we've got four left," Eales said while describing the untapped Whobegotyou as a "kids' good first pony".

"He is a very calm horse, you can do anything with him, good natured."

Asked about the prospects of the Mark Kavanagh-trained Whobegotyou taking on the best in Saturday week's Cox Plate, Eales was diplomatic.

"I'll have a talk to Mark, no doubt we'll talk about it over a few beers tonight," he said.

"I'll go with whatever Mark wants to do, he is the trainer and I'm 100 per cent behind him."

For Eales the dream of winning a major race on a carnival day goes back to his youth.

"Up near Cairns we watched all the races with a few mates, had a punt, you'd sit there going, 'Oh, it would be good to up there one day', it is amazing," he said.
